Spiky wattles of the Wheatbelt
Published 9 July 2024

Among the surprisingly diverse flora of arid Australia, there are two genera that seem to dominate everywhere you go: Eucalyptus and Acacia. For many, the name Acacia is associated with the silver wattles and blackwoods of the east of Australia (for others, it is indelibly linked with the spiny acacias of the African savannah, but that is an issue I have covered elsewhere). However, the West of the continent is home to its own assemblage of unique acacias, one exemplar being Acacia jacksonioides.

Acacia jacksonioides, copyright Joel Collins.

Acacia jacksonioides is a small, densely branching shrub, growing up to 70 cm in height (Orchard & Wilson 2001). Branches are smooth and divaricating with the numerous short branchlets ending in spines. Most plants have a waxy whitish coating over the branches though this may occasionally be absent. Like many other Acacia species, A. jacksonioides lacks true leaves, instead having small phyllodes (flattened leaf-like stems) emerging from the branch-points. These phyllodes are perpendicular to or bent back towards the branches and are more or less oval or oblong in shape, growing up to a centimetre in length and half a centimetre wide. Flowers are borne in the classic wattle arrangement of globular golden heads, without bracteoles at the base of the head. Seed pods are curved or coiled, growing up to four centimetres in length but only about three millimetres wide.

Close-up of Acacia jacksonioides, copyright Tim Hammer.

Acacia jacksonioides was recognised as a distinct species by B. R. Maslin in 1976, who noted that it had previously been confused with A. intricata. However, that species lacks the short, divaricating, spinose branchlets of A. jacksonioides, as well as having shorter, more rigid phyllodes and shorter peduncles on the flower heads. Orchard & Wilson (2001) noted that A. jacksonioides could be distinguished from the related species A. erinacea and A. spinosissima by the more erect arrangement of the phyllodes in those species, and by the presence of bracteoles in the flower heads of A. erinacea. Maslin (1976) named his new species for its resemblance in growth habit to some species of Jacksonia, another genus of leguminous shrubs.

Distribution of Acacia jacksonioides, from Wikipedia.

The range of Acacia jacksonioides forms a narrow band from near Geraldton, a few hundred kilometres north of Perth, to Mt Vernon near Hyden, a comparable distance east of Perth (Orchard & Wilson 2001). This puts it towards the eastern margin of the Wheatbelt, a broad band of semi-arid countryside that runs more or less diagonally along the outer edge of Western Australia’s South-west corner. The preferred habitat of A. jacksonioides is gravelly sand or loam, often exposed on hilltops. While I haven’t seen any discussion of the conservation status of A. jacksonioides specifically, it is worth noting that native habitat in the Wheatbelt has been extensively cleared, for reasons that are kind of evident in the region’s name. As one gets further east and the climate becomes progressively drier, farmsteads do get fewer and farther between. Recent years have, of course, seen an increasing degree of aridity across the Wheatbelt; time will tell whether A. jacksonioides sees such change as a challenge or a boon.
