Belongs within: Orthorrhapha.
Contains: Asilidae, Apioceridae, Mydidae, Therevidae, Scenopinidae, Bombyliidae.
The Asiloidea are a diverse clade of often relatively large flies, most of which are predatory or parasitic as larvae. Members include the Mythicomyiidae, small flies with palpi reduced or absent, and wings with R4+5 unbranched and MA absent, that are often classified as a subfamily of the related Bombyliidae. Adult mythicomyiids are nectar and pollen feeders; larvae, where known, attack the immature stages of other insects (Evenhuis et al. 2009).
