Callidosomatinae

Caeculisoma sp., copyright Jiku.

Belongs within: Erythraeoidea.
Contains: Abrolophus, Charletonia.

The Callidosomatinae are a group of erythraeid mites whose adults have the eyes placed behind the midpoint of the crista and lack sensory pits on the body. Larvae have a square or rounded dorsal scutum. In members of the tribe Callidosomatini, the adults possess tubercles towards the distal end of the leg tibiae; these are absent in the Charletoniini. Larvae of Callidosomatini possess a distinct hook structure on the posterior pedotarsal claw (Southcott 1961a). Adults of Callidosomatini are divided between the genera Callidosoma, in which the palp is strongly built and modified for grasping, and Caeculisoma, in which the palp is slender and provides a tactile function only (Southcott 1961a). Momorangia is a callidosomatin genus known only from larvae collected in New Zealand, distinguished by a relatively high number of setae (more than three pairs) on the prodorsal scutum (Southcott 1972). Pussardia and Grandjeanella are two genera identified from larvae only with two pairs of scutal setae and similar lateral tarsal claws (Southcott 1961a).

Characters (from Southcott 1961a): Adults and nymphs with one eye on each side. Crista metopica present; eyes are placed behind middle of crista. Crista may continue behind posterior sensillary area. Idiosoma of adult and nymph without special sensory pits (urnulae). Pedal tibiae of adults and nymphs may have prominent distal tubercles. Larvae with one eye on each side; with rounded or squarish dorsal scutum, not triangular. Larval dorsal idiosomal scutum lacking crista.
