Cyphaleus is a diverse Australian genus of tenebrionid beetles with relatively long appendages (Matthews & Bouchard 2008). The species C. childreni bears a remarkable lichen-like covering on the elytra.

Characters (from Matthews & Bouchard 2008): Length 11–35 mm. Third antennomere twice as long as fourth and antennae able to reach well beyond base of prothorax. Clypeal margin not excised, clypeolabral membrane wholly uncovered. Lacinia armed with uncus. Pronotum more flattened than bases of elytra. Scutellum subequilateral. Prosternum costate and deeply interlocking with mesoventrite. Metaventrite about as long as first ventrite. Femora projecting well beyond body outline. Wings fully developed. Aedeagus with short, blunt apical piece.
