Denticollinae

Crepidomenus neboissi, copyright Museums Victoria.

Belongs within: Elateridae.
Contains: Hapatesus, Elatichrosis, Glypheus, Dicteniophorus, Drymelater, Neboisselater, Athous.

The Denticollinae are a group of click beetles in which the head is typically more or less flattened in front, giving it a prognathous appearance. In the Pityobiini, sometimes treated as a distinct subfamily Pityobiinae, the frontoclypeal region is produced forward to partially cover the labrum (Calder 1996).

Characters (from Calder 1996): Head usually flattened in front, occasionally more or less convex. Frontal carina usually incomplete medially (although carinate over antennal bases), occasionally complete across front between eyes. Prosternum usually produced anteriorly to form ‘chin piece’, rarely truncate. Marginate edge of hypomeron nearly always inclined meso-dorsally. Mesocoxal cavity usually open to both mesepimeron and mesepisternum, rarely open to mesepimeron only. Hind wing with short radial cell; vein MP4 with apparent crossvein to CuA2; wedge cell present; apex of wing membrane (without venation) occupying at least 0.2× total length of wing membrane; apex either with two sclerotisations at acute or obtuse angle to each other or single slanting sclerotisation. Tarsomeres usually with spongiose pads apico-ventrally, occasionally simple and never lamellate; occasionally widened laterally. Tarsal claws simple without basal setae on outer flat portion.
