Elaterini

Rusty click beetle Elater ferrugineus, copyright Frank Vassen.

Belongs within: Elaterinae.

The Elaterini are a group of click beetles with a deflexed head, serrate antennae, anteriorly excavated prosternal sutures, and lingulate scutellum. Members of the type genus Elater have metacoxal plates that are sharply angulate near the mid width. Dolerosomus and Neotrichoporus, in contrast, have the metacoxal plates broadly rounded and sinuate near the mid width. The genus Diplostethus is distinguished by a strongly to acutely angulate declivity on the intercoxal process of the prosternum immediately posterior to the coxae. Orthostethus and Parallelostethus attenuatus have the sides of the mesosternal fossa horizontal with the anterior portion strongly declivous (Johnson 2002).
