Empidini

Empis tessellata, copyright Richard Bartz.

Belongs within: Empidinae.

The Empidini are dance flies characterised by broad wings with a well developed anal lobe (Wahlberg & Johanson 2018). Within the tribe, members of the genus Empis have vein R4+5 unbranched, and antennae inserted near the middle of the head with the first flagellomere lengthened and longer than the scape (Cumming & Sinclair 2009).

Characters (from Wahlberg & Johanson 2018): Wings broad with well-developed anal lobe; wing costa ending near R5. Forelegs with slender first tarsomere and legs without raptorial adaptations. Scutellum with at least one pair of strong setae, laterotergite bearing setae.
