Entomozoidae

Valves of Rabienella materni, from Wang (1987).

Belongs within: Halocypridida.

The Entomozoidae are a group of fossils known from the Ordovician to the Permian, usually classified as ostracods though this has been questioned on occasion. The carapace bears a long, deep nuchal furrow in most species assigned to the subfamily Entomozoinae but this furrow is slight or absent in most of the Devonian Richterininae. Boucia ornatissima, known from the Upper Silurian of Bohemia, bears a posteroventral sulcus in addition to the nuchal furrow (Benson et al. 1961).

Characters (from Benson et al. 1961): Large; surface often striate; without rostrum, rostral sinus or anterodorsal swelling; often with long, deep nuchal furrow (sometimes slight or absent).
