Hedychium

Hedychium is a southern Asian genus of gingers bearing flowers with exserted stamens (Smith 1987).

Characters (from Smith 1987): Leaf shoots many-bladed. Inflorescence many-flowered, terminal on leafy shoot; bracts free, broad and imbricate, concealing main axis, or narrow and strap-shaped, each subtending three to six flowers; bracteoles tubular. Corolla tube slender; lobes more or less equal. Labellum conspicuous. Lateral staminodes petaloid. Filament usually long, slender; anther not crested. Ovary trilocular. Fruit a capsule.
