Helops

Belongs within: Tenebrionidae.

Helops is a cosmopolitan genus of darkling beetles with an excavate mesosternum and short metasternum (Aalbu et al. 2002). Many species in the genus are in need of revision.

Characters (from Aalbu et al. 2002): Eyes transverse, vertically elongate, subparallel, strongly inflated. Labrum transverse; mandibles with mola not planar; lacinia with single tooth; maxillary palp securiform. Mentum small, trapezoidal, ligula prominent. Procoxal cavities broadly closed. Mesosternum excavate, declivous in front; mesocoxal cavities closed by mesepimeron; metasternum shorter than mesocoxal diameter. Tarsi pubescent ventrally.
