Leptura is a cosmopolitan genus of longicorn beetles with posteriorly tapering elytra. North American species of the subgenus Stenura are large, robust species with stout, subserrate antennae.

Characters (from Turnbow & Thomas 2002): Head elongate, narrowed behind eyes; antennae slender, usually lacking poriferous areas (if present, poriferous areas reduced to small round pits near apices of outer antennomeres); labrum free; mentum trapezoidal; submentum with intermaxillary process; pronotum without lateral margin, transversely impressed at apex, hind lateral angles acute; procoxae conical; elytra about 2.5× as long as broad, colour variable, narrowed at apices, wings folded at apex; mesonotum with finely striated stridulatory area, divided by a median vitta; tarsi pseudotetramerous, padded beneath, third tarsomere dilated, concealing true fourth
tarsomere.
