Lixus

Lixus scabricollis, from UK Beetle Recording.

Belongs within: Lixinae.

Lixus is a genus of elongate weevils, their elytra at least twice as long as their combined length, with a cylindrical rostrum, triangular to kidney-shaped eyes whose lower edge is close to the ventral edge of the rostrum, and basally conjoined claws. They lay eggs in the stems of herbaceous plants. The species L. paraplecticus was once falsely accused of causing paralysis in horses. The European L. cardui has been introduced to Australia to control scotch thistle Onopordum acanthium.
