The Lophiiformes, anglerfishes and related taxa, are marine fishes with a spinous dorsal fin composed of one to a few flexible rays, some of which may be modified into a fishing apparatus (Bond 1996).

Characters (from Bond 1996): Gill openings small and tube-like; dorsal fin spinose, with one to a few flexible rays; pectoral radials long and narrow; ribs absent; caudal fin borne on single hypural plate derived from fusion of two ural centra and first preural centrum.
