Metistete

Metistete pimeloides, copyright Cath B.

Belongs within: Alleculinae.

Metistete is an Australian genus of alleculine beetles. Most species have stomatiform punctures on the elytra though these are occasionally absent; those species lacking such punctures can be distinguished from the related Homotrysis by the maxillary palps (Matthews & Bouchard 2008).

Characters (from Matthews & Bouchard 2008): Length 8.4–24.0 mm. Generally fully winged, rarely females flightless. Head short. Eyes moderate to large, separated by two eye widths or less. Mandibles clearly bidentate. Apical maxillary palpomere more or less enlarged (more so in males) and scoop-like, with lower edge produced more than upper. Prothorax with complete lateral margin. Elytral surfaces rarely tuberculate, sometimes carinate, usually at least some punctures stomatiform (with thickened lateral edges resembling lips or sometimes tubercles) and containing a single very fine recumbent seta. Basal metatarsomere not widened.
