Odiellus spinosus, copyright Dick Belgers.

Belongs within: Phalangiidae.

Odiellus is a genus of phalangiid harvestmen found through the greater part of the Holarctic region. They are characterised by a series of conical spines on the underside of the pedipalp femur, together with a narrow penis that often bears a dorso-distal groove (Martens 1978).

Characters (from Martens 1978): Truncus penis strikingly slender, continuously narrowed from the base distad, i.e. half or whole truncus almost parallel-sided; dorso-distally with gutter-shaped depression (exceptionally absent). Glans mostly grooved ventrally, laterally concave. Muscles usually restricted to basal half of truncus. Pedipalp with conical spines only on trochanter and underside of femur, spines usually no longer than half femur diameter, remaining segments only bristled; no segment with long apophysis, but femur mediodistally, patella, and tibia medially swollen in many species and brush-bristled. Supracheliceral lamellae smooth. Anterior margin of cephalothorax with 3-5 medial conical denticles, with the median three always longer and the midmost the longest. Tuber oculorum low and small, approximately two times its length from the anterior margin of the cephalothorax.
