The Oppioidea are a diverse group of oribatid mites with moniliform legs and lacking true lamellae on the prodorsum, generally recognised as the largest oribatid superfamily. Members of the Oppioidea include the Oppiidae, a diverse family of over 1000 species that mostly feed on fungi. Oppiids divided between several subfamilies, one of which was established for the Spanish species Paternoppia andalusicabulensis as recently as 2000 (Subías 2004). Of these subfamilies, the Antilloppiinae are distinctive in having the genital and anal plates particularly large, occupying almost the entire length of the ventral plate. The Pulchroppiinae have long third and fourth epimeres that reach far posteriad of the genital plates, and lack the fourth apodemata (Balogh & Balogh 1992).

The Suctobelbidae have slender, elongate chelicerae. The genera Suctobelbila and Suctobelbiloides are distinctive in the notogaster having very short setae borne on large rounded tubercles; other genera lack such tubercles and the setae are usually longer. The Holarctic genus Rhinosuctobelba has a particularly elongate rostrum, with a single pair of large lateral teeth. Geniculate rostral setae are found in the genera Novosuctobelba, Fenestrobelba and Suctobelbella (Balogh & Balogh 1992).

Other families include the Autognetidae, characterised by a deep medial incision on the rostrum and a large dorsodistal tubercle on tibia I overhanging the tarsus. The Granuloppiidae are a pantropical group characterised by the presence of costulae on the prodorsum together with the absence of apodemata IV. The Teratoppiidae have the first two pairs of tibiae expanded laterally, with apophyses (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009).

The Autognetidae are a family of oribatid mites characterised by the presence of subparallel costulae on the prodorsum, and small humeral tubercles (Balogh & Balogh 1992). All genera except Austrogneta and Eremobodes have a median incision on the rostrum, and Balogh & Balogh (1992) suggested the latter two genera may be misplaced in this family. The northern Asian genus Parautogneta bears cristae on the anterior part of the notogaster (Balogh & Balogh 1992).

The Machuellidae are a group of oppioid oribatid mites in which the epimeral setae form a ventral basket covered by cerotegument.

Sternoppia is a genus of oppioid oribatid mites characterised by large plumose coxisternal setae together with two overlapping plates covering the coxisternum (Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009).

The Quadroppiidae are a family of oppioid oribatid mites with relatively elongate costulae on the prodorsum.

The Teratoppiidae are a near-pantropical group (absent in Australia) of oribatid mites with characteristic expanded tibiae bearing lateral apophyses.

Nosybelba: a uniquely Madagascan mite
Published 3 April 2013
Dorsal and ventral views of the main body of Nosybelba oppiana, from Mahunka (1994).

Why yes, it’s another random oribatid! Nosybelba oppiana was described from Madagascar by Sándor Mahunka in 1994; Mahunka regarded it as distinct enough from other oribatids that he placed it in its own monospecific family. To date, the original description appears to be the sum total of our knowledge of Nosybelba oppiana. Subías et al. (2012) transferred it to a separate subfamily within the larger family Oppiidae, and transferred a second Madagascan species ‘Oppia spinipes‘ Balogh 1964 to Nosybelba, but this was in the context of a species checklist only without supporting discussion (also, the name Oppia spinipes was used for an oribatid species by Banks in 1906, so whatever the status of Balogh’s species it needs a new name).

Leg I of Nosybelba oppiana, from Mahunka (1994). Femur and genu on the right, tibia and tarsus on the left.

So what can we tell about Nosybelba from its description? One of the first things that attracts attention is that it has rather weird legs. The tarsi (the terminal segments) of the legs are really short, shorter on all legs than the adjoining tibia. On the first pair of legs, the tarsus is also compressed longitudinally, and a dorsal process on the tibia (that bears a large sensory seta) overhangs the tarsus. To my admittedly uneducated eyes, the overall structure does not give an impression of mobility. I’m guessing that Nosybelba is not the most agile of oribatids. At the end of each leg is a single large claw; the number of claws on an oribatid’s legs tends to correlate with habitat, with single claws suggesting a terrestrial lifestyle.

Lateral view of front end of Nosybelba oppiana (minus legs), from Mahunka (1994).

Another noteworthy feature of Nosybelba can be found in its mouthparts. The mentum, the ‘under-head’ shelf that underlies the chelicerae, does not have a basal articulation, so the chelicerae are limited in their range of movement. The chelicerae themselves do not have any teeth, so Nosybelba is not feeding on anything that requires a great deal of processing before swallowing. In another oribatid family, the Suctobelbidae, similar chelicerae are related to a diet of plant matter that is in an advanced state of decay; Nosybelba is presumably also a connoiseur of the rotten and the liquefied.

Systematics of Oppioidea

Characters (from Norton & Behan-Pelletier 2009): Prodorsum with or without costula; large, paired flat regions (tectopedial fields) present or absent; without genal notch. Tutorium absent. Dorsophragmata and pleurophragmata absent. Subcapitulum diarthric, eupathidium acm separate from recumbent solenidion; chelicerae and rutella normal or modified (suctobelbid) type, with chelicerae attenuate and edentate or with fine teeth distally; 2 cheliceral setae; palptarsus with 8–9 setae. Body with constriction in sejugal region. Prodorsum and notogaster separate. Notogaster often with tubercles or crista anteriorly; notoqastral setation 9–14 pairs. Posterior notogastral tectum usually absent; humeral apophysis present or absent. Circumpedal carina, custodium and discidium absent. Pedotectum I usually present, small, scale-like; pedotectum II absent. Epimera III and IV fused; coxisternal setation 3-1-3-3, or epimera III and IV neotrichous; 4–7 pairs of genital setae; ventral neotrichy absent. Preanal organ without caecum. Legs moniliform. Trochanter III with 1–2 setae; tarsus II with 2 solenidia; proral setae of tarsi II–IV short and spinelike; pretarsi monodactylous. Immatures apheredermous, unideficient, or nymphs bideficient.
