The Rhizoglyphinae are an ecologically diverse group of astigmatan mites, commonly associated with moist temporary habitats. With the exceptions of the basal genera Acotyledon and Viedebanttia, many rhizoglyphines exhibit male polymorphism with major males developing modifications for fighting. The genus Sancassania includes species found in fungal fruiting bodies, root crops and human habitats. Species of Acotyledon include significant pests causing damage in grain stores. Other rhizoglyphines live in association with insects such as scarab beetles or ground-nesting bees (OConnor 2001). A small group of morphologically distinctive genera including Ewingia, Askinasia, Hoogstraalacarus and Kanekobia, previously classified as a separate family Ewingiidae, are found as commensals on crustaceans (OConnor 2009).

Characters (from Baker & Wharton 1952): Inner propodosomal setae shorter than outer; legs stout, the setae in many cases being modified as stout spines; microsense and macrosense setae arising from same base.
