Sellnickochthonius

 Sellnickochthonius sp., copyright Zoë Lindo.

Belongs within: Brachychthoniidae.

Sellnickochthonius is a cosmopolitan genus of brachychthoniid mites, characterised by the presence of three pairs of suprapleural plates and adanal setae with the rear two pairs widened and blade-like (Balogh & Balogh 1992). The greater number of species in the genus have been described from the Holarctic region. A number are known from seemingly disjunct distributions such as S. suecicus found in the Holarctic region and Australasia (Subías 2004).

Characters (from Balogh & Balogh 1992): Notogaster with two transverse sutures and three shields, no setae arising within sutures; shield Na bearing two rows of setae (c and d); fields of shield Na differentiated into anterior and posterior group, often paired in median line; seta d2 in marginal position, aligned with longitudinal row of setae cpe2. Pleural region with three pairs of suprapleural plates (SpC, SpE and SpF). Two pairs of adanal setae (ad2 and ad3) widened, blade-like. Peranal plate present.
