Suboval ambersnail Catinella vermeta, copyright Ron Matsumoto.

Belongs within: Heterobranchia.
Contains: Succineinae.

The Succineoidei are a group of terrestrial molluscs whose members have optic tentacles that retract that do not invert, and elasmognathous jaws with lateral winged processes and a greatly enlarged attachment plate. The cosmopolitan Succineidae are thin-shelled, conical snails with a greatly enlarged aperture and strongly impressed sutures. Apical whorls have a distinctly nipple-like appearance. Many species are found along the margins of water bodies, feeding on algal films growing on damp surfaces, and the Miocene Papyrotheca may have been entirely aquatic (Gray 1988). The Australasian Athoracophoridae are brightly coloured slugs with the mantle confined to a small triangular area in the centre of the back. The internal shell has been reduced to scattered fragments or granules of calcium (Stanisic et al. 2010).
