Band-eyed brown horsefly Tabanus bromius, copyright Entomart.

Belongs within: Tabanidae.

The Tabanini are a cosmopolitan group of horse flies, most diverse in the Northern Hemisphere. The largest genus Tabanus is probably polyphyletic, being largely defined by the absence of characters found in other genera (Burger 2009). Some species of Tabanus grow quite large, up to three centimetres in length. A hook-like projection extends from the basal plate of the antennal flagellum in the genera Agkistrocerus and Hamatabanus, which also have sparsely hairy eyes (Pechuman & Teskey 1981).

Characters (from Pechuman & Teskey 1981): Scape barely longer than wide. Basicosta with macrotrichia similar in appearance and density to those on C. Hind tibia without apical spurs. Male gonostylus truncate. Ends of spermathecal ducts in female with mushroom-like expansions.
