Tenebrio, mealworm beetles, is a genus of scavengers on fallen vegetation and organic detritus, with larvae of some species being pests of stored grains. Larvae of the yellow mealworm beetle T. molitor and dark mealworm beetle T. obscurus are also widely cultivated as a food source for pets.

Characters (from Matthews & Bouchard 2008): Elongate-oblong, parallel-sided, glabrous, piceous. Head in repose porrect. Elytra completely covering abdomen, with nine primary striae and scutellary striole. Wings without medial fleck. Mesocoxal cavities open. Abdomen with complete membranes visible between ventrites 3 to 5. Aedeagus with extensible median lobe connected to tegmen by spinose membrane
