Trichouropoda orbicularis, photographed by Eric Palevsky.

Belongs within: Uropodoidea.

Trichouropoda is a genus of uropodoid mites characterised by the presence of one or two pairs of remarkably long posteroventral setae on the idiosoma (Evans & Till 1979). They are commonly nidicoles, probably feeding on fungi and organic debris in nests and insect galleries. The species T. orbicularis may be found colonising food storages (Lindquist et al. 2009).

Characters (from Evans & Till 1979): Levator tendon of movable digit of chelicera with a sclerotized node; dorsal shield not divided; idiosoma with one or two pairs of outstandingly long setae posteroventrally; both sexes with pedofossae; genu I lacking paired ventral setae.
