The Volutoidea are a clade of neogastropods supported by molecular data uniting the families Volutidae and Cancellariidae.

The Cancellariidae, nutmeg snails, are a group of marine gastropods adapted for suctorial feeding, found in subtidal to bathyal sand and mud bottoms (Petit & Harasewych 1990). Among the subfamilies of the Cancellariidae, species of Plesiotriton have more elongate shells than others. The Cancellariinae have thicker shells with columellar pleats whereas Admetinae have thin shells that usually lack columellar pleats.

The Volutidae, volutes, mostly have large, fusiform shells with strong plaits on the columella. Most species have a large, colourful feet and burrow in sand (Wilson & Gillett 1971).
